Texas Wins Area Development's Shovel Award for 11th Consecutive Year
AUSTIN – For the 11th year in a row, Texas has been named one of the best states in economic development by Area Development, a leading publication focused on site selection and facility planning. The Lone Star State-- along with two other states with populations over 12 million, Florida and Illinois-- are recipients of Area Development's 2016 Silver Shovel Award in recognition for achievements in winning new business investment in 2015 and job creation.
Texas is only one of two states that have won a Shovel Award from Area Development magazine every year for the 11 years the award has been in existence.
The top projects that made Texas a Silver Shovel winner include:
- Liberty Mutual Insurance
- Capital One Financial
- Sempra Energy
- Total Petrochemicals
- General Motors
- BASF/ Yara
Area Development’s Annual Shovel Awards recognize state economic development agencies that drive significant job creation through innovative policies, infrastructure improvements, processes and promotions that attract new employers as well as investments in expanded facilities.
Each of the 50 states was invited by Area Development to submit information about its top-10 job creation and investment projects. Only those projects that began to materialize in 2015 were considered. The Shovel Awards are given to the states with the highest weighted scores based on number of high-valued added jobs per capita, amount of investment, number of new facilities, and industry diversity.
“The states and communities receiving 2016 Shovel Awards not only have the right combination of factors to attract and retain business,” says Geraldine Gambale, editor of Area Development, “they also display a pro-business attitude and marketing savvy. They deserve to be recognized for winning high-impact economic development projects.”
Area Development is published quarterly and also maintains several highly visited websites, which can be reached through www.areadevelopment.com.
