Taylor EDC wins Business Facilities’ Silver Award for $17B Samsung project
Business Facilities magazine has awarded the Taylor Economic Development Corporation the prestigious Silver Award for its work to secure Samsung Electronics’ new state of the art, $17 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility.
The Samsung semiconductor project, announced Nov. 23, 2021, is forecast to add 2,000 new high-tech jobs and about 6,500 construction jobs to Taylor, in Williamson County, 28 miles northeast of Austin. Samsung’s $17 billion investment is the largest foreign direct investment on record in Texas. Construction will start on the 1,200-acre facility this year, and the facility should be operational by the second half of 2024.
Texas has a strong track record of success in competition with other states for Business Facilities’ Deal of the Year. In 2020, the Austin Chamber of Commerce won the Gold Award for its work in bringing Tesla’s Giga Texas to the Austin area. Texas was the leader in foreign direct investment in 2020.
“Taylor Economic Development Corporation, working with Gov. Greg Abbott, the Office of Economic Development and Tourism and elected leaders in Taylor, did an exceptional job in working with Samsung to beat out other states in securing this history-making project for Texas,” said Robert Allen, President and CEO of the Texas Economic Development Corporation.
“Samsung’s presence in Taylor will help cement Texas’s reputation as a state that welcomes international business interests,” he said. “Samsung’s decision to expand in Taylor, Texas, is the prime example of a business that has found success in Texas and is now doubling down.”
Business Facilities announced its annual Deal of the Year awards this week. A committee of nationally recognized site consultants selected this year’s winners. Due to the high number of deals that were completed in 2021, this year’s awards competition brought in a record-setting number of submissions.
Two Texas economic development organizations won 2021 Impact Awards from Business Facilities for projects:
- Leprino Foods, Lubbock Economic Development Alliance
- Texas Instruments’ 300-mm semiconductor wafer facilities, Sherman Economic Development Corporation
