Covering 21,700 square miles along the U.S.–Mexico border and the Texas-New Mexico state line, the Upper Rio Grande region includes the El Paso metro area and some of Texas’ most breathtaking landscapes.
It is home to Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks, major tourist attractions, as well as Marfa, a renowned arts and culinary hub. The region’s close ties to Mexico influence its diverse and vibrant cuisine.
A center for international commerce, particularly in the Borderplex area of El Paso and Juarez, the Upper Rio Grande boasts a highly diverse economy with top industry clusters spanning multiple sectors. Job growth is strong in computer and mathematical fields, life sciences, and architecture and engineering. The region is supported by major universities, including The University of Texas at El Paso and Sul Ross State University.
