High Plains Region for Business

Bordering New Mexico and Oklahoma, the High Plains region spans 42,100 square miles and encompasses the Texas Panhandle, including the Lubbock and Amarillo metro areas.

Known for its striking landscapes, the region features Palo Duro Canyon and the scenic Prairie Dog Town Fork Red River. Home to Texas Tech University and West Texas A&M University, the region fosters innovation through programs like the TTU Innovation Hub and WT Enterprise Center. Agriculture remains a key industry, supplying livestock and crops nationwide, while a growing transportation workforce supports exports. The High Plains is also a leader in renewable energy, with over 2,000 wind turbines contributing to Texas’ top-ranking wind power production.

Efforts to diversify the economy and workforce are underway, along with infrastructure improvements, particularly in managing the region’s vital Ogallala Aquifer.
