How Project Stargate Puts Texas at the Center of AI

Project Stargate is one of the clearest signs yet that the next era of artificial intelligence (AI) will be built on massive physical infrastructure. This $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative from OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX is a long-term bet on where AI compute, power, land, talent, and speed-to-build can come together: Texas.

Stargate reinforces the Lone Star State’s position as a leading market for AI infrastructure in the United States.

What Is Project Stargate?

Project Stargate is a new AI infrastructure company announced by OpenAI in January 2025 that will build the compute foundation needed to train, run, and scale next-generation AI systems through 2029.

The venture will invest up to $500 billion over four years to build AI infrastructure in the U.S., with $100 billion planned for immediate deployment including founding partners like:

  • OpenAI
  • SoftBank
  • Oracle
  • MGX

The project’s four founding parters are OpenAI, SoftBank Group, Oracle, and investment firm MGX. It’s also backed by technology partners including Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI.

Stargate makes one point clear: AI growth is no longer only a software story. It increasingly depends on where companies can build, power and operate the physical infrastructure behind advanced computing.

Project Stargate and Texas

The project’s campus in Abilene is already operational, with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and NVIDIA systems supporting early training and inference workloads. The first two buildings were energized within a year of construction beginning, and Oracle began delivering NVIDIA GB200 racks in June 2025, per Crusoe.

The Abilene campus is expected to serve as one of the largest AI infrastructure sites in the country when fully developed.

But Texas’ Stargate role is expanding beyond Abilene. In September 2025, OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced five additional U.S. Stargate sites, with two Texas locations in Shackelford County and Milam County. These expansions will bring the platform to nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity and more than $400 billion in planned investment over the next three years.

What Does Stargate Mean for Texas’ AI Future?

Stargate signals that AI infrastructure Texas investments are moving from speculative opportunity to operating reality. The project connects directly to the same fundamentals driving data center, semiconductor, energy, and workforce investment across the state.

But the impact reaches far beyond servers and GPUs. Large-scale AI campuses can support construction activity, local supplier demand, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term technology jobs as more tech companies relocate to Texas. They also support how data centers benefit Texas communities when growth is paired with planning, workforce development, and local investment.

For executives and investors, Stargate is a clear signal that Texas is becoming a place where AI infrastructure can move from concept to capacity at scale.

Texas Is Building the Infrastructure Behind AI

The future of AI depends on places that can support massive compute infrastructure—and Texas is proving it can compete for that role at scale.

From Abilene to future sites across the state, Stargate reinforces Texas’ role as a leader in AI infrastructure, data center growth, and next-generation technology investment.

Stargate is not just a technology announcement. It is a signal that AI leadership will depend on the places that can deliver power, land, infrastructure, workforce and speed-to-build at scale. For companies evaluating where to build, expand or invest in AI infrastructure, TxEDC can help connect that opportunity to the regional and state partners that make growth possible in Texas.
