SpaceX Starbase: How South Texas Became a Commercial Spaceflight Hub
SpaceX Starbase Texas has turned the Brownsville-Harlingen region into one of the most visible commercial spaceflight sites in the country. Built around SpaceX’s Starship program, the facility supports production, testing, and launch activity near Boca Chica, creating a new economic growth story that extends far beyond rocket launches.
Starbase is driving jobs, manufacturing, tourism, supplier activity, infrastructure investment, and momentum across South Texas aerospace. What does this mean for Texas’ economy as a whole? Let’s take a closer look.
What Is SpaceX Starbase?
Starbase is SpaceX’s South Texas hub for Starship manufacturing, testing, and launch activity. SpaceX relocated its headquarters from California to Texas in 2024 and operates its Starbase launch facility near Boca Chica, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas
The site is central to Starship, SpaceX’s next-generation rocket system. SpaceX is developing Starship in South Texas with ambitions to support crewed missions to the moon and Mars, per Dallas Fed researchers, making Starbase a major piece of the future of commercial spaceflight in Texas and beyond.
Jobs and Investment in the Rio Grande Valley
Starbase is now one of the largest economic development stories in the Rio Grande Valley. In fact, SpaceX’s Starbase presence is expected to generate more than $13 billion in gross economic output and support about 24,000 local jobs through 2026, per county-reported figures shared by the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal.
The same report attributes more than $305 million in indirect tax revenue, $147 million in local supply-chain spending and participation from more than 350 local suppliers to SpaceX’s operations.
Starbase and Aerospace Manufacturing
Starbase is not only a launch site. It’s also an aerospace manufacturing center.
SpaceX began work in April 2025 on GigBay, a 700,000-square-foot facility intended to produce up to 1,000 rockets per year, per the Texas Tribune.
A manufacturing operation of that scale can expand demand for workers, engineers, suppliers, logistics providers, and skilled trades. It also connects Starbase to Texas’ manufacturing and industrial growth and the broader Texas aerospace and aviation sector.
Why South Texas Works for Commercial Spaceflight
South Texas offers geographic and operational advantages for launch activity, as launch sites closer to the equator can require less fuel to reach orbit, while eastward launch paths over water or less-populated areas can help reduce certain launch risks, per Dallas Fed researchers.
Starbase also benefits from Gulf access, available land, proximity to the Port of Brownsville, a growing regional workforce, and Texas infrastructure that supports industrial-scale development.
Starbase and Texas’ Broader Aerospace Advantage
Texas has long been a major aerospace and defense state. Texas is home to companies such as:
- Lockheed Martin
- Bell Textron
- Boeing
- Raytheon
It also houses newer commercial space companies including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Axiom Space, and Intuitive Machines.
The state’s aerospace and defense sector employs about 170,000 workers, and Texas employment in the sector has grown 18% since 1990, while national aerospace and defense employment declined slightly over the same period, as noted by Dallas Fed researchers.
What Does Starbase Mean for South Texas’ Next Phase of Growth?
As SpaceX expands its footprint, South Texas can build deeper strengths in aerospace manufacturing, advanced materials, precision fabrication, engineering support and industrial services. County leaders have also pointed to permitting, public-private partnerships and workforce initiatives as part of that next phase, helping more residents prepare for careers tied to aerospace, engineering, advanced manufacturing and commercial spaceflight.
